Winter weather alert

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for Gibson and Posey Counties in Indiana and Edwards, Wabash, White and Gallatin Counties in Illinois because of the possibility of light sleet or freezing rain.

The advisory is in effect from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Wayne, Franklin, Hamilton, Jackson and Perry Counties in Illinois from 3 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday.

A light wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain will be possible early Thursday morning around the time of the morning commute.  There is some possibility that the precipitation will hold off until surface temperatures rise above freezing during from mid morning to early afternoon.

In the areas where a warning has been issued, snow and additional freezing rain or sleet are possible.               

If indeed precipitation begins around the time of the morning commute...motorists should use extra caution and be aware that a thin layer of ice may be present on some roadways...especially elevated roads and secondary streets.
