Lt. Gov. encourages new 6th-12th grade math courses

Lt. Gov. encourages new 6th-12th grade math courses

Lt. Governor Sheila Simon and the Illinois State Board of Education today released the state’s first 6th-12th grade math curriculum and urged middle and high schools statewide to implement the new courses beginning this fall.

The new curriculum package aims to reduce remedial math needs for college-bound students and improve career readiness for those going into the workforce. In 2012, 58 percent of Illinois high school graduates failed to meet the math college readiness benchmark, according to the ACT. Research shows when students enroll in remedial math courses at college, they are more likely to drop out or graduate late.

To make sure Illinois students are better prepared for college-level math and careers, Simon worked with ISBE last year to pass Senate Bill 3244 and launch the Math Curriculum Task Force to design the first-ever statewide math curriculum units. The units outline teaching techniques aligned with Common Core standards, providing educators a better road map for math instruction than ever before.

Southeastern Illinois College has a long history of providing accessible and affordable higher education to citizens of its district, and a bridge either directly to a career, or in preparation for transfer.

Those were the types of results Shawna Browning of Carmi expected – a stepping stone to a four-year institution and then a solid career in a computer science field. Along the way, though, Browning – a Spring 2013 graduate with honors – has sought out the full community college experience – with opportunities for personal growth, expanded horizons, service, and learning both in and out of the classroom.

Browning’s time at SIC actually began before her high school career ended, as she took some college courses during her summer breaks.

Members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society at Southeastern Illinois College held an anti-bullying campaign last month to inform students about the various types of bullying.  Pictured above is Shawna Browning of Carmi (left) explaining to Breanna Bergeron of Norris City about how bullying can happen anywhere and to anyone.

The club gave some pointers on how to help stop bullying at school, online or in the community, and asked fellow students to sign a pledge to stand up to bullying.

The group also visited Carmi’s Jefferson Elementary School to help raise awareness at the elementary level.

On Thursday, May 2, Southeastern Illinois College held its annual Honors Night in the George T. Dennis Visual and Performing Arts Center. Hundreds of students, family and friends along with SIC faculty and staff converged to celebrate academic and extra-curricular achievements of the student body.

Among the honorees was Patrick McKenzie of Carmi who accepted the Rodney J . Brenner Memorial Scholarship from presenter Ayn Bartok (above).
