Illinois won't help fund New Harmony Bridge

Indiana State Sen. Jim Tomes received a letter Tuesday from Illinois Department of Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider declining any participation in funding the New Harmony Bridge project.

“The department understands and appreciates the concerns of our citizens, the Indiana Department of Transportation and our respective state and federal legislative leaders following the May 2012 closure of the existing but structurally unsound New Harmony Bridge,” Schneider writes. “However, Illinois has experienced declining state and federal revenues similar to many other states… IDOT has to respectfully decline the proposal to financially participate in the construction of a new bridge over the Wabash River for the purpose of connecting New Harmony, Indiana to White County, Illinois.”

You can help clean up Ohio River shoreline

Volunteers are needed for River Sweep 2012 scheduled for Saturday, June 16, along the shoreline of the Ohio River and its many tributaries.

River Sweep is a riverbank cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and beyond.  More than 3,000 miles of shoreline will be combed for trash and debris.  This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states.

“The Ohio River Sweep is very important because for a few hours on one day volunteers can help make a difference in the appearance of this great natural resource,” said Jeanne Ison, Project Director.  “The Sweep has grown so much in the past few years, we’ve been able to expand the project to tributaries and feeder streams of the Ohio River.”
