Tiny voter turnout in Wabash County; area cities elect new mayors

 

Less than 7% of Wabash County’s eligible voters bothered to cast a ballot in Tuesday’s consolidated election.  That’s according to our media partner, the Mt. Carmel Daily Register.

County Clerk Janet Will says that might give the county the dubious honor of lowest voter turnout in the state.

Albion’s mayor and two other city officials have resigned their positions in the wake of a dispute with a city alderwoman.

Mayor Ryan Hallam, city clerk Gary Mason and City Collector Lilly Belle all stepped down, forcing the city council into executive session where Alderman Brett Berger was appointed interim mayor.

Our media partner, the Princeton Daily Clarion, reported that the departures appear to be the result of a long-running feud over how the city’s fire department operates.

Congressman Tim Johnson will leave office

U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson announced his retirement today at a news conference in the Urbana City Council Chambers of the Urbana City Building, where he began his career in public service more than 40 years ago.

The 65-year-old six-term incumbent easily defeated a Republican challenger in the primary and his announcement has caught the party off guard.  They will now try to find a replacement to run against Democrat David Gill in the fall.
