Mayor, officials quit in Albion

Albion’s mayor and two other city officials have resigned their positions in the wake of a dispute with a city alderwoman.

Mayor Ryan Hallam, city clerk Gary Mason and City Collector Lilly Belle all stepped down, forcing the city council into executive session where Alderman Brett Berger was appointed interim mayor.

Our media partner, the Princeton Daily Clarion, reported that the departures appear to be the result of a long-running feud over how the city’s fire department operates.

The Clarion reports that Hallam’s resignation letter took issue with Alderwoman Karen Shupe’s questions over how the Albion Volunteer Fire Department conducts its affairs that eventually resulted in Hallam receiving a letter from a law firm.  The letter ask for a public apology for how the council and the fire fighters have treated Shupe in the wake of those questions.

She says since she spoke up, fire trucks have been driving past her West Main Street home honking their horns.
