SALINE CO, IL (WFIE)- A discarded cigarette is being blamed for a 100 acre fire in Saline County, Illinois.
It broke out around 4:30 p.m. at the former Will Scarlet Mine property near Carrier Mills.
Firefighters say the thick, dry brush was like fuel for the flames and uneven terrain made it difficult to fight.
Crews from four different neighboring towns responded, plus firefighters from Williamson County Fire Protection and the US Forest Service.
Five firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion at the scene, one was taken Harrisburgh Medical Center.
