Unemployment declines across southern Illinois | News

Unemployment fell in 17 of the 21 counties in Southern Illinois compared to one year ago. The data is not seasonally adjusted.
Wabash County's rated is at 7.6%, compared to 8.5% in May of 2011. Edwards County has also seen a significant decline over the past 12 months.
Workforce conditions were stable in the spring of 2012 throughout the area. Significant building projects continued on schools, medical buildings and highways.
Seasonal payroll gains occurred in Retail Trade, Leisure-Hospitality and Transportation. Employment increases were reported in Professional-Business Services, Financial Activities and Mining. Employment opportunities continue to be available in Health Services.Most student summer employment opportunities are at Retail, Food Service and Recreation establishments.
The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and seeking employment. A person who exhausts benefits, or is ineligible, still will be reflected in the unemployment rate if they actively seek work.
