Cave in Rock Ferry was closed during manhunt

To assist with a police investigation, the Illinois State Police and Hardin County Sheriff prohibited traffic from crossing the Cave-In-Rock Ferry from Kentucky into Illinois for several hours this morning.

Webster County, KY murder suspect Billy Utley was surrounded and captured at Cave-in-Rock Motel about 8:50 a.m.

Ferry operator Lonnie Lewis complied with that request and only allowed traffic from Illinois into Kentucky from the start of service until about 9:00 a.m., CDT.  Traffic from Kentucky into Illinois was restored about 9:00 a.m.

The ferry connects KY 91 with ILLINOIS Route 1 across the Ohio River between Crittenden County, KY, and Hardin County, IL.

The ferry normally operates from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. central time, 7 days a week.  The ferry carries about 500 vehicles across the Ohio River in an average day.
