ISP: 3 hurt when distracted, drunk driver's truck overturns | News
Police say a drunk driver talking on his cell phone late Wednesday night drove his pickup truck off the road where it overturned, sending three people to the hospital.
Troopers say 23-year-old Ryne Johnson of Harrisburg was driving east on Kedron Road in Gallatin County about 10:40. While talking on his phone, they say Johnson didn't see the road coming to a T and his 1997 Chevy Silverado crossed east over Grater Road, before impacting a ditch and overturning onto the passenger side.
Johnson and the two passengers in the truck, Laura E. Hubbs, age 20 of Equality and Ashley R. Terry, age 21 of Harrisburg, were all transported by Med Force Ambulance Service to Ferrell Hospital in Eldorado for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash. Terry was later transferred to Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. None of the occupants of the vehicle were wearing their seat belt at the time of the crash.
The Illinois State Police was assisted at the crash scene by the Gallatin County Sheriff’s Department and the Shawneetown Fire Department.
Johnson, Hubbs and Terry were all cited for Illegal Transportation of Alcohol and Failure to Wear Seat Belt. In addition, Johnson was charged with Driving Under the Influence and Failure to Reduce Speed to Avoid an Accident. Hubbs was also cited for Illegal Consumption of Alcohol by a Minor. The crash remains under investigation by Illinois State Police District 19.
