Southern IL women encouraged to sign up for state health registry

Southern IL women encouraged to sign up for state health registry

Lt. Governor Sheila Simon today encouraged Southern and Central Illinois women to improve medical research and treatment by signing up for the Illinois Women’s Health Registry.

The registry is designed to help medical professionals understand why diseases effect women differently from men, but to date most of the women enrolled are from the Chicagoland area. This means downstate women’s health needs may be unrepresented, Simon said.

Simon’s message came as she proclaimed it Women’s Health Day alongside officials from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH), Northwestern University and the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in the Capitol rotunda.

Fairfield (IL) Memorial Hospital has hired Kathy Clayton as the new Chief Financial Officer.  Clayton comes to Fairfield with 28 years of experience from a Critical Access Hospital facility at Perry County Memorial Hospital in Tell City, IN.

“After 28 years in the same facility, I was ready for a change with new challenges.  I enjoy the hospitality of a small community and when I saw this opportunity present itself, I knew it would be the perfect place to transition to,” Clayton said.

Clayton has worked in many business areas of a hospital and began her career in Admitting, transferred to the Business Office, promoted to Staff Accountant, and continued to professionally advance to the Chief Financial Officer position.  During her tenure as part of the administrative team at Perry County Memorial Hospital, FMH says she assisted in planning a new $50 million hospital and lead the finalization of a $40 million loan for the facility.

Want to drop some weight? Get busy in the yard

Want to drop some weight? Get busy in the yard

Our New Year's determination and resolutions to eat better, lose weight, and exercise more have gone by the wayside, said a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator.

"Being cooped up indoors doesn't help either," added Martha Smith. "We look out the window at our sleeping gardens, planning for the coming season as we munch on carb after sugary carb."

But there is hope. There is an activity that can provide exercise and cardio training and improve our flexibility. It builds muscle and helps prevent osteoporosis. It also helps relieve stress and provides our families with nutritious fresh food. All of this without leaving home and fighting for the stairmaster at a crowded gym.

NIOSH’s Mobile Occupational Safety and Health Unit will be in our area soon to conduct black lung screenings at various locations throughout southern Illinois.  All coal miners are encouraged to stop by the mobile and participate in this free health exam.

Typically, testing takes about 25 minutes and includes a short questionnaire, a chest x-ray, and a spirometry (breathing) test.  Blood pressure screening will also be available.  Although walk-ins will be accepted, miners are urged to call 1-888-480-4042 to schedule an appointment.

Depending on the number of miners participating, some wait time should be anticipated.  Hours are 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
