Do you love the outdoors but can’t find the time to enjoy it?  Are you tired of your typical Saturday…errands, laundry, kids, cleaning, chores…the same old rut?   Here’s a chance to break out of it.

You  don’t have to be in tip-top shape or handy with an axe…this is simply your chance to spread your wings and try something new in a beautiful outdoor environment.   The 2013 IL State Women in the Outdoors event is being held  the weekend of May 3-5 at Camp Ondessonk in Ozark, IL.  The event is being co-hosted by the Illinois State Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and Southeastern Illinois College.

Mt. Carmel couple wins $100,000 in Easter Seals sweeps

Bryant and Mary Jeffers of Mt. Carmel had a profitable day.  The couple won the grand prize of $100,000 at Thursday’s final "key ceremony" for the 2013 Easter Seals Home Run Sweeps ALL CA$H Raffle.

The two say they have been entering Easter Seals raffles since 1992, when their grandson, Beau Singer, was the local Easter Seals Child Representative.  Bryant Jeffers indicated that he purchased the couple’s $100 ticket early in this year’s sales period, which proved to be a lucky move, even though his wife urged him to wait until closer to the deadline.

Edwards County Farm Bureau's 20-cent breakfast is Saturday

Edwards County Farm Bureau's 20-cent breakfast is Saturday

The Edwards County Farm Bureau, in conjunction with the Edwards County FFA, is offering breakfast for 20 cents a plate this Saturday.  Not 20 cents off…20 cents per plate.  It’ll be a hearty one, too.  Breakfast will consist of pancakes, eggs, sausage, milk, and orange juice.

“The American farmer only receives 15.8¢ out of every dollar spent on food that is eaten at home and away from the home,” stated Rebecca Perry, FBCM, Edwards County. “To show the public how little of their food dollar the farmer actually gets, the community only has to pay 20¢ for their breakfast.”

Help clean up the Ohio River this June

Help clean up the Ohio River this June

River Sweep 2013 has been scheduled for Saturday, June 15, along the shoreline of the Ohio River and its many tributaries.  Volunteers are needed for this massive event.

River Sweep is a riverbank cleanup that extends the entire length of the Ohio River and beyond.  More than 3,000 miles of shoreline will be combed for trash and debris.  This is the largest environmental event of its kind and encompasses six states.

“We are so proud of the progress we have made cleaning up the Ohio River and some of its major tributaries but there is still work to be done,” said Jeanne Ison, Project Director.  “The Ohio is such a great natural resource and provides so much to so many.  We need your help.”
