Cigarette prices in Illinois could jump by $1

It isn’t law yet, but a bill to raise the tax on cigarettes in the state of Illinois by $1 per pack is moving forward.

An Illinois Senate committee approved the measure on a 9-4 vote along party lines Tuesday.  Now, it goes to the full Senate and if they approve it, it’ll go to Governor Pat Quinn to be signed into law.

The New Harmony Bridge remains closed as Indiana and Illinois legislators look for ways to pay for millions of dollars in repairs.

Legislators are considering a plan to dissolve the private White County Bridge Commission and turn the facility’s management over to a new commission with representatives from both states.

the Wabash River as 85-year-old Agnes Girten of Mt. Carmel.

1,000-year-old Indian mounds being looted and damaged

They have withstood a thousand years of the four seasons – but they can’t stand up to four wheeling or looting.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the Massac County Sheriff’s Department are seeking those responsible for the recent looting and all-terrain vehicle damage at Kincaid Mounds, a series of prehistoric Native American burial mounds in rural Massac and Pope counties.

“The criminal disturbance of these human burials in Kincaid Mounds is unconscionable,” said Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA) Director Amy Martin.  “We hope to apprehend those who are responsible, which will serve as a deterrent to others who may be considering the desecration of our state’s heritage.”

Unemployment in SE Illinois lower than a year ago

The unemployment rate fell in 20 of the 21 counties in Southern Illinois compared to one year ago according to preliminary data released  by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES).. The data is not seasonally adjusted.

Edwards County’s unemployment rate was 8.1% in April 2011 but has dropped to 7.1%. In White County, the rate now stands at 6.7%; in Wayne County 7.5% and in Wabash County 7.7%.  All counties in the 14 News viewing area have seen a drop in the number of unemployed residents from a year ago.
